Marilyn Aldridge | Assistant Computer Technician | My secretarial skills began as a clerk for the Public Library in the early '70's. They progressed, as I became a clerk in the USAR for 3 years. I then took a long break from the work force to practice my parenting skills and returned to work in 1988 for the Daviess County Public Schools as a substitute teacher. I did this for 2 years. I found a permanent home as a teaching assistant at Tamarack Elementary in 1990 where I worked for 10 years. The first 6 years were spent as a remedial reading assistant and then as my computer skills began to shine (I had gone back to school), I was put in the computer lab to teach and I would circulate throughout the school troubleshooting any computer problems that came up. I worked with the first group of children that participated in the computer program called "Fast ForWord" and watched as they developed their language skills tremendously from this program. The DCPS computer operations became so familiar with me during the time I spent trouble shooting and working with Fast ForWord, that they decided to adopt me into their family as their secretary. |
Steve Burton | Computer Operations Manager | My first experience with computers was in 1978 writing very simple programs in interpreted Basic while attending Oral Roberts University. In 1980 I moved up to Mini-computers, a Digital PDP-11/23, customizing a system to predict residential LP Gas usage based on the Degree-Day system and writing a complete accounting and shipping system for an LP Gas trucking company. In 1982 I purchased my first PC, using it mainly as a terminal into the DEC. In 1989, I went to work for a computer dealer, becoming certified in SCO Xenix. In August 1990 I became a Certified Netware Engineer. November 1 1990, I went to work for the Daviess County Public Schools in the newly created position of computer technician. I maintained all the computers in the district, installed the networks and servers. In July 1994, I became Computer Maintenance Supervisor and engineered and oversaw the wiring of all 21 buildings, over 200 miles of cat 5 cable. In April, 1996, I went to work for Applied Computer Technology in Coats, NC, in the Research and Development group as Network Administrator and Development Services Manager. I designed their wide area network that covered California, Colorado, Nevada, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas. I was also in charge of the Quality Assurance and Documentation sections for all software development. In January 1998 I became an Microsoft Certified Profession in Windows NT Server. June 1998, I had the opportunity to return home to my true calling, as Computer Operations Manager for the Daviess County Public Schools. |

John Crady | Building Computer Technician (Apollo High School) |
I taught math for 32 years, just retiring in June of 1997. About 10 years ago when Susan Smith left Apollo to go to the Central Office to become District Technology Coordinator, I became the Schoolmaster system manager for my school. Then about six years ago when the KERA legislation mandated a technology network in the state, I became the STC for Apollo. Last year our Site Based Council recommended creating the position of Technology Resource Person and I assume those duties upon my retirement. Then the superintendent recommended hiring computer technicians for the high schools and middle schools for this school year. I was hired in that position at Apollo for the current school year. |
Joyce Davis | District Computer Technician | I have been employed by the Daviess County School System for ten years. For six years I was a teachers aide. The last four years, at Highland Elementary School, I worked exclusively in the computer lab teaching children keyboarding, troubleshooting the computers throughout the school, training teachers on software and maintaining their web page. April 1998 I was hired at my current position. In July 1998 I completed a ACT 1000 for Windows training course. Currently I am taking a correspondence course on PC Repair through the Professional Career Development Institute. |

Hervey Howell | Building Computer Technician (Central Office) |
I first discovered the computer in the IBM pavilion at the 1958 World Expo in Brussels. In 1965 I took my first computer course in data processing, learning about punch cards and mark sense cards. I took a course in GE Basic, and started work on a simulator for predicting mine ore recovery and dilution. It was not until 1985 that I came back to data processing, with the advent of PC's. I developed an ore blending simulator in Basic for a mine in Canada. This was followed by increasingly complicated accounting functions written for this mine and others, all in various flavors of Lotus. I became adept with Lotus macros. My final product was a simulator for an industrial process that identified bottlenecks and pinpointed areas for process improvement. In 1996 I found himself seeking a new career, and decided to focus on my computer skills. I studied for the Novell CNE certification, took a course and did some work in Visual Basic, and was lucky enough to find a job with Daviess County Public Schools, where I have now been happily employed for more than a year. |
